Re your island trip I recommend the via Viator.com which does Murano, Burano and Torcello 1/2 day and so cheap and good! Many friends loved it as much as me!

we just got back from Venice stayed at Hotel San Marco 2 days then got on a cruise to Croatia and Greece and Montenegro the hotel was very nice and close to piazza san Marco
